Research Opportunities
Post-doctoral fellow/research associate
Department of Biology
McGill University, Montreal, Canada
Job Description:
We seek a biologist to join a multidisciplinary team of biologists, plant genomicists, and bioinformaticians as part of a Genome Quebec/ Canada-funded project at McGill University (VEGI; Value-directed Evolutionary Genomics Initiative). The project aims to identify functional non-coding regions of agronomic importance in mustard family plants using comparative genomics, population genomics, and experimental techniques.
The candidate will conduct research on gene annotation and population genomics, in particular comparison of commercially valuable, alternative spliced gene variants in several mustard species that have evolved under negative (purifying) or positive (adaptive) selection. He/she will analyse and annotate high-throughput sequencing data (including alternative spliced-, pseudo- and RNA genes and transposons in different populations). He/she will work in close collaboration with researchers in the comparative and population genomics teams and the VEGI economy team to evaluate regions that are most likely to be of agronomic importance.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Biology with demonstrable experience in alternative splicing in plants and population genomics. An additional degree in computer sciences with a minimal of 3 years of experience in computer science is highly preferable. The position requires experience with data management and analysis, and strong programming skills.
Apply:
The position is initially funded for two years with potential for continuation after completion of the project. Salary is commensurate with training and experience. Preference will be given to Canadian candidates.
Candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vita, and names of two references before October 15, 2011.
